ORLANDO, Fla. - Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas docked unexpectedly in Port Canaveral, Florida, due to Hurricane Erin. Passengers were informed of the change only two or three days prior to the stop. The original itinerary included a visit to Bermuda, which was canceled.
According to reports and a statement from Royal Caribbean RCL, the passenger did not fall through the hole, but was nevertheless injured when a piece of acrylic glass broke off from the slide. Icon of the Seas, which can hold up to 7,600 passengers plus crew, was dubbed the largest cruise ship in the world when it launched in 2024.
Storms that ramp up so quickly complicate forecasting and make it harder for government agencies to plan for emergencies. Hurricane Erick, a Pacific storm that made landfall June 19 in Oaxaca, Mexico, also strengthened rapidly, doubling in intensity in less than a day.

A Royal Caribbean cruise ship made a stop in Central Florida on Sunday after being rerouted because of Hurricane Erin. The Vision of the Seas pulled into Port Canaveral just after sunrise Sunday morning. The ship had departed Maryland on Thursday and was originally headed to Bermuda.
