Longtime fan favorite Matt Martin left little doubt at the end of the season he knew his time with the Islanders was coming to an end. He made it official on Tuesday, announcing his retirement as an active player after 15 NHL seasons, all but two with the Islanders.

Veteran NHL forward Matt Martin, renowned for his physicality, has retired after 16 seasons, 14 with the New York Islanders. With nearly 1,000 games played, he amassed 3,936 hits. Martin will now serve as a special assistant to the Islanders' GM.
