Coronavirus has sparked a new conversation about the difference between ventilators, CPAP and BiPAP machines.
A BiPAP machine, along with CPAP machines, are typically used by patients who suffer from sleep apnea, McLaughlin explained.
CPAP machines typically start around $500, while biPAP machines can be had for about $1,200. Ventilators, however, range in price from $20,000-$50,000.
A CPAP machine helps people with trouble breathing and is commonly used to treat sleep apnea. CPAP machines can't directly replace ventilators, as they have key differences in how they work.
Several Philips ventilators, CPAP and BiPAP machines were recalled in June 2021. The company is currently working to repair and replace the affected devices.
