The router on a stick is good for learning but for any topology where there is intra-vlan routing by gigabit capable machines, it is a terrible real world solution.

As you show if it is a traditional router where you create sub-interfaces to the physical interfaces, or with VLAN interfaces for layer 3 config (and treat the physical interfaces like switch ports).
